Tech 101: Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA)
The Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) is transforming how defense and aerospace systems are developed, maintained, and upgraded. By prioritizing modularity and openness, well done MOSA approaches reduce complexity, cost and development times while also promoting innovations and adaptions for future modernizations. Unfortunately, poorly executed MOSA approaches will do exactly the opposite.
In this introductory webinar, participants will learn about the core principles (modularity and openness) of MOSA-based approaches and their associated benefits. Real-world commercial examples will be used to illustrate these concepts and the typical pitfalls of MOSA-based approaches. We will explicitly address the use of standards, noting where they provide benefits and where they create challenges. We will tie these observations back to the current law governing the use of MOSA in DoD systems and four current patterns for employing MOSA in DoD systems.
By exploring both the principles that motivate MOSA and the practical realities of implementations, this webinar provides essential understanding for stakeholders aiming to leverage MOSA-based approaches to reduce cost, improve interoperability, and foster continuous technological advancement in complex systems (such as those that we see in defense and aerospace sectors).
