ISAC: Unlocking a New Dimension of Communication and Sensing in 6G
Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) is a key component of 6G technology, enabling each node, whether a user equipment (UE) or a next-generation NodeB (gNB), to either passively or actively sense its surroundings. The passive approach means that the target does not need to carry any specific devices, such as mobile phones or smart watches, and is not actively transmitting data, thereby protecting its information from potential adversary interception. Furthermore, ISAC takes advantage of the existing RF signals as well as the communication infrastructure for sensing, eliminating the need for additional devices such as cameras, reducing implementation costs and challenges while enabling pervasive environment sensing.
ISAC is rapidly evolving. Although there are extensive research directions addressing its various challenges, there is still a need for a comprehensive self-contained source that covers its fundamental theories, software and hardware design considerations, applications, and challenges. This book addresses the gap in accessible and comprehensive information on ISAC by providing a guide that is useful for both technical professionals and general readers. It provides readers with the theoretical foundations, software, and hardware design methodologies, and explores the diverse applications and potentials of ISAC across various fields.
