From Chaos to Clarity: Conceptual Modeling for Complex Systems
Conceptual modeling forms the foundation for understanding and representing complex systems in a specific domain, especially in software development. It enables clear communication between stakeholders and facilitates creating robust and adaptable systems. Entity-relationship (ER) modeling is a cornerstone of conceptual modeling that provides a structured approach to capturing the relationships among different entities in a system. In this webcast, Dr. Wolfgang Maass, Dr. Hyoil Han, and Hasan Yasar discuss key principles of conceptual modeling and explore its significance in various domains and its role in driving successful system design. They will explain and present details of ER modeling, demonstrating its application in constructing comprehensive and accurate data and business models. Join us to enhance your ability to translate complex ideas into clear, actionable models that pave the way for successful software development and beyond.
What Attendees Will Learn
- fundamentals of conceptual modeling
- conceptual modeling’s purpose, benefits, and applications with ERs across different domains
- how to apply conceptual modeling to real-world scenarios
- techniques for translating complex systems into clear visual models
Speaker and Presenter Information
Hasan Yasar is the technical director of the Continuous Deployment of Capability directorate at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). He leads an engineering group that develops prototype solutions with DevSecOps. He specializes in secure software solutions design and development in the cybersecurity domain, including digital investigation, incident management, and large-scale malware analysis. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
Wolfgang Maass has degrees from Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH Aachen) University and Saarland University, including a Ph.D. in Computer Science. He is a distinguished professor at Saarland University specializing in Business Informatics and Computer Science. He also serves as a senior data science advisor at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the United States. As the scientific director at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), Maass focuses on research in data economics and applying artificial intelligence across various industries such as manufacturing and health.
Hyoil Han has been an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the School of Information Technology at Illinois State University since the fall of 2016. Hyoil received her BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Korea University in her hometown, her MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and her Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. Previously she worked for Samsung Electronics as a researcher and Telecommunication Network Lab.
