“Workflow warfare” is a term within the Department of Defense that calls attention to and places value on back office functions, which serve a critical role in mission success but can be overlooked when considering modernization and digital transformation.

That concept is applicable beyond the boundaries of the military, however; accelerating those workflows will allow faster transformation and provide advantages in meeting any agency’s mission. An effective workflow warfare strategy will also allow an agency to connect digitally across their entire organization and with outside partners. Capturing the benefits of transformed workflows translates into strengthening the pursuit of its mission.

These changes could be simple or complex – anywhere improvements are made along that spectrum, they reduce the friction that slows the rate of change, moving the bureaucratic machine more efficiently, with the added benefit of improving morale.
