Research tells us that crime and harm are heavily concentrated, so why do we still use traditional patrol zones? Speaker and Presenter Information
Madison Charman works as an Organizational Researcher with the Barrie Police Service. She holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree in criminology and leverages her research skills to fuse evidence-based methods with police practices and policies. She plays an integral role by operationalizing research to inform the operational and strategic decision-making at the Barrie.
Sgt. Randy Fitzgerald began his policing career in 2002 with the Durham Regional Police, where he worked in uniform patrol and as a Detective Constable assigned to the Break Enter and Auto recovery Unit. In 2012, Sgt. Fitzgerald started with the Barrie Police Service, and joined the Street Crime Drug Unit in 2015 until he was promoted to Sergeant in 2019. He has recently completed training with Cambridge University’s Evidence-based Policing centre and works to implement evidence-based practices while leading Barrie’s Community Safety and Well-being Team.
Deputy Chief Rich Johnston has been policing for 24 years, beginning his career with the Ontario Provincial Police in the fall of 1997 in Northern Ontario. Deputy Chief Johnston has worked across all areas of the Barrie Police Service including Operations, Operational Support, Investigative Services and Executive Services.
