It has been more than a decade since the Obama administration adopted a “cloud first” strategy for IT modernization. The policy shifted in 2019 to a “cloud smart” approach. Agencies across the federal government have been including cloud migration in their digital transformation initiatives over this period.
But 10 years is a long time for any digital technology, and as cloud computing has matured its long-term drawbacks and limitations have emerged, particularly with regard to its economics. Storage and compute expenses in the cloud do offer savings through economies of scale – but the cost of moving massive amounts of data into and out of the cloud has turned out to be far more expensive than expected. Issues of security and control also portend a stormy future for the cloud.
Join us as thought leaders from government and industry share their insights and experiences with cloud computing, whether to repatriate data to on-premises data centers, and the tradeoffs required.
