Data Governance & Strategy at the Department of Homeland Security
This event qualifies for 1 CPEs
In 2009, Data.gov was launched. Over 7 years ago, the first person to hold the title Chief Data Scientist was hired by the White House. Around this same time, agencies started to hire the first CDOs in order to establish ownership and accountability for harnessing insight from data, ensuring compliance, and making efficiency gains in the use and dissemination of data. In other words, effective data governance was identified as a key initiative across agencies. Leadership at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognized the importance and impact of the power of clearly understood, accurate, quality data in support of their mission to secure our nation.
Today, the DHS has over 700 members across multiple agencies collaborating and sharing data as a result of their program and journey to Data Intelligence. Curtis Ross will discuss the steps DHS has taken, starting with a Data Stewardship Tact ical Working Group. Hear some lessons learned, successes, and plans for the future with data at DHS.
Curtis will be joined by Collibra and Tableau in this discussion as complementary technology platforms used in support of public sector agencies in their data governance journey. Collibra provides the tools to understand the entire context of customer data while Tableau enables customers to gain insight and take action from that same data.
