Summit Overview

There are people smarter than you, they have more resources than you, and they are coming for you. Good luck with that.
Matt Olney (SourceFire) said that when describing the Advanced Persistent Threat attacks earlier this year. He was not joking. The results over the past year clearly indicate that hacking groups are racking up success after success. Over 30 companies have been compromised by the Advanced Persistent Threat. Organized crime utilizing botnets are exploiting ACH fraud daily. Similar groups are penetrating banks and merchants stealing credit card data daily. Fortune 500 companies are beginning to detail data breaches and hacks in their annual stockholders reports. The enemy is getting better, bolder, and their success rate is impressive. Are we? We can do better. We need to field a more sophisticated incident responders and forensic investigators. We need lethal forensicators that can detect and eradicate advanced threats immediately. A properly trained incident responder could be the only defense your organization has left in place during a compromise. You need to know what you are up against. You need to know what the seasoned experts in the field know. You need to stay ahead constantly seeking new knowledge and experience.

The 2011 SANS What Works in Digital Forensics and Incident Response Summit gives you access to the state of the art in computer forensic techniques. Top industry leaders, forensics and incident response professionals, and vendors will discuss the latest defenses and technologies in a series of highly interactive sessions focused on effective incident response and mitigation, forensic analysis, and recovery as a result of a data breach incidents.

Reviews of Previous SANS Digital Forensics and Incident Response Summits For those who missed it, a quick post of the reviews of the 2009 SANS WhatWorks Summit in Forensics and Incident Response.

One of the best perspectives was written by Dave Hull. Wrote up a couple of posts summarizing day one and day two as he remembers seeing it.

Craig Ball wrote, "The talented presenters didn't disappoint. The leading lights in forensics and information security shared their tips, tools and insights;" See his post at EDD Update for his full review.

Harlan Carvey said, "it was totally awesome and well worth every second I was there." All of Carvey's comments are over at his Windows Incident Response blog.

Chris Pogue wrote, "Being able to hear speakers like Harlan Carvey, Oive Carroll, Richard Bejtlich (pronounced BAIT-LICK), Jesse Kornblum, Jamie Butler, Troy Larson, and Eoghan (pronounced OWEN) Casey all in one event is pretty impressive. Now throw into the mix representatives from the FBI, Secret Service, DoD, Georgia Tech, and various local, state, and federal agencies and you have something pretty special. The quality of the speakers at this year's summit made this THE conference to be at in 2009! Again, great work Rob!" Pogue's full take on the Summit is available at his blog, The Digital Standard.

Matt Shannon of F-Response said, "I whole heartedly recommend you take an opportunity to get to one soon, it's well worth the time and money invested."

Brendan Dolan-Gavitt said, "All the talks were really excellent; Rob Lee and the folks at SANS should be commended for their great work in putting everything together." Gavitt's full post is available at his blog, Push the Red Button.
