Summit on the Cost of Government

Join Governing this September as we host our annual Cost of Government Summit in the nation's capital. This important summit will bring together senior policy leaders, influential thinkers and practitioners to discuss the biggest issues in public finance, to share insights and formulate new strategies for successfully meeting the challenges facing state and local government.

Cost of Government 2014 will examine the following themes: As the economy continues to recover, what is the effect on the budgets of state and local governments? What progress has been made in tackling the issues of pension and other postemployment benefits? How are the new economic realities affecting public finance? What is the role of government in a time when government organizations are being forced to shrink while the needs for services grow and become more complex?

After the Summit, Governing will publish a Cost of Government Guide (Playbook), capturing the highlights, new ideas, and practicable takeaways on how to cope with the cost of government in these challenging times.
